Open Source CRM Zurmo Releases Version 0.8.0, Email and Theming Added

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) November 29, 2012

The Open Source CRM project Zurmo today announced the immediate availability of Zurmo Version 0.8.0. The most significant addition to the new release is the ability to send emails directly from within the application. This new functionality tightens communication trails associated with records in the system. Aesthetic enhancements include the option to vary the theme and texture of the application. A recent engineering improvement is the integration of Sentry, an application that allows users to automatically submit error reports to the Zurmo engineering department directly from the user interface.

User Interface for Sending Emails

Zurmo users will now have the ability to send emails directly within the system. This centralizes data and eliminates the need for complicated integration tools. One of the major goals of Zurmo is to create an application that can serve as the Center of Gravity for salespeople, marketing professionals, and customer service reps. In terms of enabling users to accomplish the bulk of what needs to be done to drive revenue and keep customers happy under one roof, the most recent Zurmo releases have been significant.

In 2013 people should not constantly need to go from one application to another in order to communicate and do their jobs effectively, states Zurmo Co-Founder Ray Stoeckicht. With Zurmo, we encourage users to communicate with one another through the applications intuitive, Social CRM platform. In a utopian world, there would be no email. But we have to acknowledge the reality that email still serves a major purpose for all organizations. In order to encourage users to stay inside the application, weve included a powerful email engine that links messages to records.”

Addition of Themes

Visual improvements include the option to change the applications color theme and texture to match user preferences. Zurmo is the main business application used by anyone with a customer-facing function. People are logged in for hours at a time. Just as someone should have a say in the aesthetics of their physical surroundings, they should also have a say in the appearance of the software they use, states Stafford McKay, Jr., Director of Marketing and Community Management for Zurmo. If you are finding those bone-white walls to be ever more lackluster and you need a little inspiration, then go ahead, paint them mango tango.

Integration with Sentry

An organic element to the Zurmo Engineering ethos is maintaining Open Source software that is clean and highly conducive to further development by contributors. This goal is evident in the utilization of a strict Test Driven Development methodology and also by the elimination of bugs before they become an issue. Integration with Sentry allows users to automatically submit error reports to the Zurmo engineering department directly from the user interface.

Integration with Sentry is something that our technical contributors will appreciate because they no longer need to go through the tedious process of submitting a bug report states Zurmo Co-Founder and Lead Developer Jason Green. This seamless process saves time and reduces the resistance to report issues because the effort required to do so is now significantly lower.

VDIworks Announces Open, Free Infrastructure for DaaS and Cloud-hosted VDI

(PRWEB) May 08, 2012

VDIworks, a leading provider of management and enablement software for virtualization and cloud computing, announced today that it is making available an open, free infrastructure for Desktops as a Service (DaaS), Desktop Virtualization and Cloud-hosted VDI.

DaaSStack is built on free, open components and includes VDIworks just-released, DaaSManager, to provide a complete end-to-end solution that can power the next generation of end user computing.

Were essentially announcing two very important things today, said Amir Husain, President and CEO of VDIworks. First, were committing ourselves to building a powerful, free and open infrastructure for DaaS, based on proven components. We hope this will free customers from vendor lock-in, unbelievably high costs and the challenges associated with proprietary infrastructure. Second, as part of this initiative, were launching our new DaaSManager application, and making it available to users for free.

The industry has recently started to move towards Desktops as a Service in order to address numerous shortcomings that plague todays PC infrastructure. Solutions that this new architecture promises include lowered capital costs, reduced management overhead, increased availability and security due to centralization and full support for mobility by making a users information experience accessible from any device, and any network.

While DaaS holds tremendous promise, todays solutions are proprietary and expensive, and limit customers choice in hosting providers and deployment models. Much of the management cost savings that might be realized often have to be spent on expensive licenses for DaaS enablement software. The DaaSStack initiative seeks to bring an open, free alternative to the market so that enterprises, IT departments, hardware providers, MSPs, hosting providers and others can benefit from the potential of DaaS without paying hefty monthly fees for software rental, and without being tied to only certain approved hosting companies.

DaaSStack will be based on the following components at launch:

Windward Announces New SharePoint Document Generation Software That Includes Open Source Component

Boulder, Colorado (PRWEB) July 17, 2012

DocGen specialist Windward today announced the release of the SharePoint Document Generation solution, a document creation and management tool that extends the native capabilities of SharePoint and turns it into a unified, comprehensive and easy-to-use system.

The complete solution is composed of three parts: the AutoTag tool for designing document templates, the Windward engine for generating documents, and Windward’s open-source SharePoint add-in, Arrow, which offers additional SharePoint functionality such as scheduling and version control.

“It’s rare that the code for a full-blown commercial product is turned over to the end users but that’s exactly what we did here,” said David Thielen, Windward’s founder and CTO. “We made Arrow open source so users are better able to customize it to work with their unique SharePoint setups.”

Key benefits of the Windward SharePoint document generation software are significant time savings, where users save countless hours by designing, formatting, and editing documents in familiar Microsoft Office programs; a larger and quicker ROI because there’s less ramp-up time, a shorter learning curve and minimal training necessary; and better use of company resources thanks to built-in version control, top-notch organizational tools, and a native scheduler.

Another noteworthy feature of the SharePoint system is its scheduler. Users can schedule items to be created and run automatically, so documents are being generated while they’re working on other business tasks. The powerful and flexible scheduler offers a wide range of options and timetables, allowing documents to be generated daily, yearly, and anywhere in between.

Plus, the solution enhances security through the ability to set permissions. And because the Arrow component is open source, users and SharePoint consultants can tweak the code so it easily accomplishes tasks critical for their organizations.

“The Meeting Place for Volunteer Consultants and Clients” Goes Open Source

Southampton, UK (PRWEB) February 6, 2006

Newtraid.org is dedicated to providing a source of support to organisations and individuals, mainly but not exclusively in developing countries that cannot afford commercial consultancy.

After investigation and evaluation of various systems the Newtraid web site has been totally revised and now uses Joomla, an Open Source content management system. This enables the site to be rapidly updated with fresh content and news. As it is open source, it is free, which is important for a voluntary, not-for-profit organisation and is supported by a worldwide community.

Building on the change to Joomla! Newtraid have introduced a Community Forum using the Simple Machines Forum, another Open Source program.

The Forum enables Volunteers, Clients and anyone interested in Newtraid to freely talk about anything or everything connected with Newtraid and related topics.

More importantly visitors to the site can ask questions relating to their organisation or project and anyone can contribute an answer based on their skills, knowledge and experience.

Up until now, if anyone needed help though Newtraid they would be asked for details of their organisation and confirmation that they could not afford commercial consultancy, but now if anyone has a question that can be answered in the forum, it can be posted and should get an answer from any site visitor with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience – no problem! Help can still be requested via email or by using the request form for more complex and confidential questions but visitors are encouraged to try the forum first.

Typical questions for the forum might be:

Where can I get information about small-scale brick making?

Can I get spares for an XYZ pump?

Is there anybody who supplies used computers?

What is the best Open Source office software for our village school?

Future plans are to have forums for languages other than English – we want to make this a worldwide service, which anyone can turn to for support for their projects that benefit their local community.

Troubled Times for Mambo Open Source CMS

York, UK (PRWEB) May 10, 2006

Mambo lead developer Martin Brampton today announced he was severing all ties with the Open Source project. His departure which is eerily similar to the departure of an entire development team last year comes in the wake of him finding himself unable to continue due to matters of conscience.

Brampton is a respected IT developer, columnist and keynote speaker, based in the UK. He took over the lead developer role of the troubled project last September. That appointment followed the departure of former lead developer Andrew Eddie in the infamous split and eventual formation of Joomla!

His resignation from Mambo comes after internal matters had caused him great concern. “Following the Joomla! split, the Mambo Foundation appeared to take its role of governing the Mambo project more seriously. Miro International, the Melbourne software company that held all intellectual property in Mambo, addressed one of the concerns of former developers by assigning the copyright in Mambo to the Foundation,” Brampton said. “I thought there was some hope for the future.”

In December 2005, Miro International Pty Ltd, announced that it had transferred the intellectual property it held in Mambo to the Mambo Foundation. On 4th April 2006, Ansearch Ltd, an Australian search engine and online media company, announced to the Australian Stock Exchange that it had entered into an agreement to buy Mambo Communities Pty Ltd. Mambo Communities is owned by Peter Lamont, the owner of Miro International Pty Ltd, which is being voluntarily deregistered, and current President of the Mambo Foundation.

“This set of events started to set alarm bells ringing,” Brampton said, “particularly when members of the Mambo community began asking questions on the Mambo Communities forum and being banned for their trouble.”

“Mambo Communities Pty Ltd, the company under contract of sale to Ansearch Ltd, owns the Mambo forums, help site, development forge, and latterly, the Mambo Developer Network,” Brampton pointed out. “It also owns domain names. So, when questions over the ownership of the Mambo name and trademarks arose and these were met with censorship and banning, I sought the services of an Intellectual Property lawyer to act on behalf of the Mambo Foundation.”

Martin Brampton was an unofficial member of the Mambo Foundation Board at this time and sought answers to the questions being raised in the forum. “I had always asked too many questions and registered my dissatisfaction at not getting straight answers, which did not endear me to Mr Lamont and some other Board members.”

On 25th April, Martin Brampton resigned his position on the Mambo Foundation Board. Less than an hour later, the Foundation finally admitted on the Mambo Communities forum that it did not yet own the Mambo trademarks.

In the ten days following his resignation from the Board, many of the most experienced Mambo users have left. Respected support folk using the Mambo Communities forum have found their posts removed and anyone questioning current events has been banned or blocked. The project is in disarray and some developers have found their access to the Mambo Communities-owned code and development web sites blocked.

“By these and other actions, I have been placed in an untenable position. My departure from the Mambo project is effective immediately.”
