Open Source CRM Zurmo Releases Version 0.8.0, Email and Theming Added

The Open Source CRM project Zurmo today announced the immediate availability of Zurmo Version 0.8.0. The most significant addition to the new release is the ability to send emails directly from within the application. This new functionality tightens communication trails associated with records in the system. Aesthetic enhancements include the option to vary the theme and texture of the application. A recent engineering improvement is the integration of Sentry, an application that allows users to automatically submit error reports to the Zurmo engineering department directly from the user interface.

User Interface for Sending Emails

Zurmo users will now have the ability to send emails directly within the system. This centralizes data and eliminates the need for complicated integration tools. One of the major goals of Zurmo is to create an application that can serve as the Center of Gravity for salespeople, marketing professionals, and customer service reps. In terms of enabling users to accomplish the bulk of what needs to be done to drive revenue and keep customers happy under one roof, the most recent Zurmo releases have been significant.

Visual improvements include the option to change the applications color theme and texture to match user preferences. Integration with Sentry

An organic element to the Zurmo Engineering ethos is maintaining Open Source software that is clean and highly conducive to further development by contributors. Integration with Sentry allows users to automatically submit error reports to the Zurmo engineering department directly from the user interface.

“The Meeting Place for Volunteer Consultants and Clients” Goes Open Source

After investigation and evaluation of various systems the Newtraid web site has been totally revised and now uses Joomla, an Open Source content management system. This enables the site to be rapidly updated with fresh content and news. As it is open source, it is free, which is important for a voluntary, not-for-profit organisation and is supported by a worldwide community.

Building on the change to Joomla! Newtraid have introduced a Community Forum using the Simple Machines Forum, another Open Source program.

The Forum enables Volunteers, Clients and anyone interested in Newtraid to freely talk about anything or everything connected with Newtraid and related topics.

More importantly visitors to the site can ask questions relating to their organisation or project and anyone can contribute an answer based on their skills, knowledge and experience.

Up until now, if anyone needed help though Newtraid they would be asked for details of their organisation and confirmation that they could not afford commercial consultancy, but now if anyone has a question that can be answered in the forum, it can be posted and should get an answer from any site visitor with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience – no problem! Help can still be requested via email or by using the request form for more complex and confidential questions but visitors are encouraged to try the forum first.

Typical questions for the forum might be:

Where can I get information about small-scale brick making?

Can I get spares for an XYZ pump?

Is there anybody who supplies used computers?

What is the best Open Source office software for our village school?

Troubled Times for Mambo Open Source CMS

Mambo lead developer Martin Brampton today announced he was severing all ties with the Open Source project. His departure which is eerily similar to the departure of an entire development team last year comes in the wake of him finding himself unable to continue due to matters of conscience.

Brampton is a respected IT developer, columnist and keynote speaker, based in the UK. He took over the lead developer role of the troubled project last September. That appointment followed the departure of former lead developer Andrew Eddie in the infamous split and eventual formation of Joomla!

His resignation from Mambo comes after internal matters had caused him great concern. “Following the Joomla! split, the Mambo Foundation appeared to take its role of governing the Mambo project more seriously. Miro International, the Melbourne software company that held all intellectual property in Mambo, addressed one of the concerns of former developers by assigning the copyright in Mambo to the Foundation,” Brampton said. “I thought there was some hope for the future.”

In December 2005, Miro International Pty Ltd, announced that it had transferred the intellectual property it held in Mambo to the Mambo Foundation. On 4th April 2006, Ansearch Ltd, an Australian search engine and online media company, announced to the Australian Stock Exchange that it had entered into an agreement to buy Mambo Communities Pty Ltd. Mambo Communities is owned by Peter Lamont, the owner of Miro International Pty Ltd, which is being voluntarily deregistered, and current President of the Mambo Foundation.

“This set of events started to set alarm bells ringing,” Brampton said, “particularly when members of the Mambo community began asking questions on the Mambo Communities forum and being banned for their trouble.”

“Mambo Communities Pty Ltd, the company under contract of sale to Ansearch Ltd, owns the Mambo forums, help site, development forge, and latterly, the Mambo Developer Network,” Brampton pointed out. “It also owns domain names. So, when questions over the ownership of the Mambo name and trademarks arose and these were met with censorship and banning, I sought the services of an Intellectual Property lawyer to act on behalf of the Mambo Foundation.”

Martin Brampton was an unofficial member of the Mambo Foundation Board at this time and sought answers to the questions being raised in the forum. “I had always asked too many questions and registered my dissatisfaction at not getting straight answers, which did not endear me to Mr Lamont and some other Board members.”

On 25th April, Martin Brampton resigned his position on the Mambo Foundation Board. Less than an hour later, the Foundation finally admitted on the Mambo Communities forum that it did not yet own the Mambo trademarks.

In the ten days following his resignation from the Board, many of the most experienced Mambo users have left. Respected support folk using the Mambo Communities forum have found their posts removed and anyone questioning current events has been banned or blocked. The project is in disarray and some developers have found their access to the Mambo Communities-owned code and development web sites blocked.

“By these and other actions, I have been placed in an untenable position. My departure from the Mambo project is effective immediately.”
